Another Blow To PDP As Senator Akobundu Resigns

The senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Austin Akobundu, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises within the party.

Naija News reports that Akobundu made his decision known in a letter titled “Notice of Formal Resignation”, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko.

According to the letter, the resignation takes immediate effect.

In the letter, the lawmaker said his departure followed extensive consultations with his political associates and supporters.

He noted that the prolonged internal challenges within the party had made it difficult for him to continue his membership.

At this time of our nation’s political evolution, the sad and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the Party for so long, and after wide consultations with my associates and supporters, it has become pertinent that I take the very painful but necessary decision to resign my membership of the party,” he wrote.

Despite leaving the party, the senator expressed appreciation for the opportunities he had while serving under the PDP platform.

He described his time in the party as a period of mutually beneficial service to both the PDP and the nation.

Akobundu also wished the party success in its future political engagements, noting that his decision was guided by careful reflection and principle.

Recall that three Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Wednesday defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The lawmakers, in separate letters, cited the internal crisis and leadership issues affecting the PDP for their decisions to defect to the APC.

The defectors are:

1. Sen. Ikra Bilbis, Senator representing Zamfara Central

2. Sen. Aminu Iya Abbas, Senator representing the Adamawa Central

3. Sen. Amos Yohanna, Senator representing Adamawa North.
