2027 Elections: Opposition Divided, Lack Direction – Lagos APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has criticised opposition parties in the country, accusing them of lacking coherence, courage and constructive engagement as Nigeria gradually approaches the 2027 general elections.
The party made the remarks in a statement issued on Monday (today) by its state spokesperson, Seye Oladejo.
According to the party, recent political developments suggest that the next electoral cycle may become predictable if opposition parties fail to organise themselves and present credible alternatives to Nigerians.
In the statement, the party said it was concerned that parties expected to provide strong alternatives to the ruling government had instead become characterised by internal division and political opportunism.
“The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress observes with concern that parties expected to provide credible alternatives have instead chosen the path of internal division, populist rhetoric and political opportunism,” the statement read.
The party argued that rather than building strong institutions and developing policy-driven platforms, opposition parties have focused mainly on media engagements and repeated criticisms of the government.
The Lagos APC also claimed that recent developments within opposition parties show that internal disagreements and personal ambitions are weakening their ability to function as a unified political bloc.
According to the statement, leading figures within the opposition appear to be more focused on pursuing individual political goals than strengthening their parties.
“Instead of building consensus and strengthening party structures, leading figures within the opposition appear locked in a contest of individual aspirations. The result is a fragmented political bloc unable to present a coherent national alternative,” the statement added.
The party further said that there has been little evidence of serious mobilisation, organisation or policy articulation among opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually begin.
It maintained that democracy functions best when there is a responsible and organised opposition capable of offering viable options to voters.
While criticising the opposition, the Lagos APC insisted that its party at both the federal and state levels remains focused on governance and reforms.
It said ongoing initiatives aimed at economic restructuring, infrastructural development and social interventions demonstrate the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and improving the lives of Nigerians.
“In contrast, the APC at both the federal and state levels continues to demonstrate commitment to governance, reforms and national development. From economic restructuring initiatives to infrastructural investments and social interventions, our party remains focused on delivering results and strengthening democratic institutions,” the statement said.
The party also urged political actors across the country to improve the quality of democratic engagement ahead of the next election cycle.
According to it, the political space should be driven more by policy debates, structured political organisation and clear governance proposals rather than rhetoric. It added that when the 2027 elections arrive, Nigerians will ultimately evaluate leaders based on performance, vision and the ability to provide solutions to the country’s challenges.
