Nigerian Footballers Who Hit 100 Appearances For Multiple Clubs In Europe’s Top Five Leagues
Across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, only a small band of Nigerian footballers have managed the rare feat of making at least 100 appearances for more than one club in those elite divisions.
Below are the Nigerian footballers who have achieved the feat in the history of football:
Austin Okocha
Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha did not simply play football. He performed it. Supporters turned up knowing something unexpected might happen, and more often than not, it did.
His European adventure gathered pace at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made 116 appearances, 90 of them in the Bundesliga. It was there that many first saw the full range of his daring skill and imagination.
From Germany, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain, playing 113 matches in total, including 84 in Ligue 1, and featuring six times in the UEFA Champions League. England then fell under his spell.
At Bolton Wanderers, Okocha clocked up 145 appearances, 124 in the Premier League, becoming the creative heartbeat of a side that regularly upset bigger names. In the north west, he was adored not just for what he did, but how he did it.
Nwankwo Kanu
Where Okocha thrilled, Nwankwo Kanu glided. He made football look deceptively simple.
At Arsenal F.C., he amassed 197 appearances in all competitions, with 119 of those coming in the Premier League. His 44 goals and a collection of FA Cup triumphs placed him firmly in one of the club’s most successful eras.
Later, at Portsmouth F.C., he added another 166 appearances, reaching exactly 100 Premier League matches for the south coast side. His winner in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City remains etched in English football folklore and secured his place in Portsmouth history.
Obafemi Martins
Obafemi Martins brought speed and directness wherever he went. Defenders rarely enjoyed facing him.
With Inter Milan, he featured 136 times, scoring 49 goals. Of those appearances, 88 came in Serie A, while he struck nine times in 25 Champions League outings.
A move to Newcastle United F.C. saw him reach 104 appearances overall, including 88 in the Premier League, with 28 league goals to his name. He also found the net six times in nine UEFA Cup matches for the Magpies.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni
Yakubu Aiyegbeni built his reputation on reliability. When chances came, he usually took them.
At Middlesbrough F.C., he played 104 times and scored 35 goals in all competitions, including 25 in 73 Premier League matches. His strength and positioning made him a consistent threat inside the box.
He maintained that standard at Everton F.C., registering 107 appearances and 33 goals overall, with 25 of those in the league. European nights also brought returns, as he struck four times in eight UEFA Cup appearances for the Merseyside club.
Alex Iwobi
The modern standard bearer is Alex Iwobi, the only active player in this distinguished group. He has steadily built a career defined by consistency.
He began at Arsenal F.C., where he made 149 appearances, including 100 in the Premier League and 17 in the Europa League. His next chapter at Everton F.C. produced 140 matches, 123 of them in the league.
Now representing Fulham F.C., Iwobi recently brought up his 100th appearance for the club, with 88 coming in the Premier League. Across his time with Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, he has accumulated 311 Premier League appearances, a remarkable tally for a player still firmly in his prime.
Iwobi and his uncle Okocha remain the only Nigerians to have reached 100 appearances for three separate clubs in Europe’s top five leagues.
Honourable Mentions
Joseph Yobo surpassed 100 appearances for Everton but falls short of inclusion because his other century came at Fenerbahçe S.K., which competes outside Europe’s top five leagues.
Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho became a double centurion for Leicester City F.C., yet his 64 appearances for Manchester City F.C. leave him short of the required mark for multiple clubs.
