Police Deploy Reinforcements As Suspected Lakurawa Terrorists Kill 33 In Kebbi
The Kebbi State command of the Nigeria Police Force has reinforced security in Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area following a deadly armed cattle rustling incident that claimed 33 lives.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said additional personnel and operational assets had been deployed to the affected communities in collaboration with the military and other security agencies.
He added that sustained area domination patrols were ongoing to stabilise the district and prevent further violence.
“The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community,” the statement read.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that suspected Lakurawa militants invaded Bui District on February 18 to rustle cattle.
“The attackers were believed to have crossed into the area from Gudu Local Government Area,” the statement added.
Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago reportedly mobilised in response to the incursion.
However, the confrontation between locals and the heavily armed attackers turned fatal, leading to significant casualties.
Earlier reports had indicated that at least 34 persons were feared killed when gunmen launched coordinated daylight attacks across several communities in Arewa LGA, triggering panic throughout the wider Kebbi North Senatorial District.
The police stressed that incidents involving heavily armed criminal elements require coordinated security intervention, warning residents against taking the law into their hands.
“Members of the public are urged to promptly report suspicious movements through established security channels rather than confront armed criminals, as such actions pose grave risks,” Usman stated.
Security forces have since launched targeted operations aimed at tracking and apprehending the perpetrators, blocking possible escape routes and strengthening early warning mechanisms in the troubled communities.
The Command called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts intensify to restore lasting peace and prevent a recurrence of violence in the area.
