Super Eagles Coach Éric Chelle Changes Management Team

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has taken a decisive step in his managerial career after signing with French-based agency Wilders Sport, ending his working relationship with long-time representative Abraham Sidibe.

The 48-year-old Franco-Malian confirmed the development on his Instagram page on Wednesday, drawing a line under a partnership that played a key role in his appointment as Nigeria’s national team coach in January 2025.

Chelle’s stock has risen sharply over the past year. He guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, restoring belief around the national side and reinforcing his growing reputation on the continent.

That bronze medal run did not go unnoticed, with several African nations reportedly sounding him out after the tournament.

Now, Chelle believes the time is right for a fresh professional direction.

Speaking to British-Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana of The Guardian UK, Chelle explained the thinking behind his decision.

“It is time for me to take myself to another level. I felt that this agency will give me the required support and advice that I need to do this,” the Super Eagles coach said.

Wilders Sport, which has a strong footprint in French football, represents a number of players across different tiers of the country’s league system. Chelle’s move to the agency has inevitably fuelled speculation about his long-term ambitions, particularly in France.

He has recently been linked with Ligue 1 heavyweights Olympique de Marseille, who are in the market for a new manager following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi earlier this month by mutual agreement.

While no formal approach has been confirmed, Chelle’s name has circulated among those mentioned as potential candidates.

For now, however, his focus remains firmly on Nigeria. Appointed on a two-year contract at the start of 2025, Chelle is expected to build on the momentum generated at AFCON as the Super Eagles prepare for their next round of international fixtures.
