‘Opposition Is Dead In This Country’ – Rufai Slams Tinubu On Newly Signed Electoral Act

Arise News anchor, Rufai Oseni, has questioned the decision of President Bola Tinubu to speedily sign the controversial amended electoral bill into law.

Oseni, who spoke on Thursday during the Morning Show programme, wondered if President Tinubu even took time to read the bill and subject it to scrutiny before signing it.

Naija News recalls that President Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law, sparking widespread criticisms among opposition parties.

In his reaction, Oseni raised concerns about the content of the bill and whether it was really signed for the benefit of Nigerians or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also called out the National Assembly for acting as a rubber stamp to the demands of the executive arm.

He said, “This is an aberration to democracy. The president signed a bill in less than 24 hours. Did he go through the Attorney-General? What bill did he even sign? Who vetted the bill. Did the president read the bill he signed into law or he just rushed it? Have they gone through the rightful process? What did they harmonize? What is even in the bill as we speak today?

“This is the same country where we have had discrepancies between what was signed and what was gazetted. Till today, this same rubber-stamped National Assembly cannot account for the tax bill.

“The National Assembly is not serious. The same lawmakers that sang ‘on your mandate we shall stand’ to President Tinubu.”

Dead Opposition

Speaking further, the news anchor queried the opposition parties in the country, noting that they are as good as dead.

He lamented that the opposition parties and politicians in Nigeria appear very disorganized to mount any real challenge against the ruling APC.

“I’m sorry but we have a good as dead opposition in this country. If we had an opposition that is thriving, by this morning they should be the ones running around filing court cases.

“I think this opposition should even go and learn opposition from the APC because they don’t look ready and organized to me,” he said.
