Police Our Number One Enemy – Aisha Yesufu Faults Teargassing Of Protesters At NASS Complex

Renowned rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has described the Nigeria Police Force as the “number one enemy” of Nigerians following the teargassing of protesters at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the main entrance of the National Assembly complex when demonstrators attempted to gain access to the premises.

Naija News reports that hundreds of protesters, including women, were thrown into confusion as canisters were fired, forcing many to scamper for safety.

According to Daily Post, eyewitnesses said some demonstrators fell over one another in their bid to escape the choking fumes, creating a chaotic scene around the entrance of the complex.

The protesters were reportedly demanding the adoption of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

Reacting to the development, Yesufu criticised the police in a post on social media, accusing the force of suppressing citizens’ rights.

“The number one enemy of the people of Nigeria is the Nigeria Police Force!

“On the campaign trail, as we have an Area Council Election on Saturday, only to hear of police tear-gassing unarmed protesters demanding mandatory electronic transmission of results!

“The Nigerian Police Force is the tool of oppression used to suppress the Nigerian people. That must stop,” she wrote on her 𝕏.

Her comments have since sparked reactions among activists and political observers, with renewed concerns over the handling of peaceful demonstrations and the protection of civil rights.

The incident adds to ongoing debates about policing, electoral reforms and citizens’ freedom of expression in the country.
