Why Kun Khalifa FC Withdrew From Nigeria Premier Football League
Kun Khalifa FC have announced their withdrawal from the 2025-2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in protest over what the club described as an “unfair sanction” imposed by the league authorities.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Amaefula, said Kun Khalifa would no longer participate in a competition “that disregards the challenges faced by its member clubs and prioritises punishment over fairness and justice”.
The decision follows disciplinary measures taken by the NPFL after the Imo-based side failed to travel to Maiduguri for their Matchday 24 clash against El Kanemi Warriors on 2 February 2026. The league ruled that the reasons provided for missing the fixture were “unacceptable”, subsequently docking Kun Khalifa three points and three goals, alongside a ₦10 million fine.
Kun Khalifa FC, however, insisted that it had formally notified the NPFL of its logistical difficulties, “including the breakdown of our team’s vehicles”, and accused the league of ignoring those communications. The club also alleged that the fixture was “unilaterally” rescheduled without adequate consultation.
“The decision to forfeit 3 points and 3 goals, coupled with a fine of N10m, is not only disproportionate but a clear indication of the NPFL’s bias against our club,” the statement read.
“We believe that the sanctions are a travesty of justice and demonstrate a lack of willingness to engage with clubs fairly and transparently.
“We urge the NPFL to review their policies and procedures to ensure that clubs are treated fairly and with respect. We also call upon other clubs to demand reforms and greater accountability from the league management.”
Kun Khalifa FC are one of four privately owned teams in the 2025/26 NPFL season, alongside Remo Stars, Ikorodu City and Barau FC. The current campaign marks their first appearance in Nigeria’s top flight, following a rapid rise through the lower divisions in just five years.
In August 2025, the club publicly appealed for financial support to cope with the cost of competing in the NPFL, admitting it might struggle to fulfil away fixtures without assistance.
The last time a club failed to complete an NPFL season was in 2012, when Ocean Boys were disqualified after missing four consecutive matches.
