Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Wednesday, 14th January, 2026

Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Wednesday, 14th January, 2026

1. Ignore Rumours On New Tax Law, No Automatic Deductions From Bank Accounts – NRS Boss

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Dr Zacch Adedeji, has moved to calm rising public anxiety over the newly implemented tax reforms, insisting that neither the old tax regime nor the new laws empower any authority to tax money sitting in Nigerians’ bank accounts.

Naija News reports that Adedeji made the clarification on Tuesday while speaking on Journalists’ Hangout, a current affairs programme aired on TVC, amid widespread rumours that the new tax laws could trigger automatic deductions from personal and corporate bank accounts.

The revenue chief stressed that taxation in Nigeria is strictly tied to profits and returns, not assets or savings.

His comments come against the backdrop of claims that transfers, account narrations or balances could expose individuals to tax deductions following the commencement of the reforms on January 1, 2026.

Adedeji dismissed the claims as misinformation, maintaining that there is no legal provision that allows tax authorities to dip into bank accounts simply because money is transferred or retained.

2. Kwankwaso Endorses NNPP Gov Yusuf’s Move To APC

Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has endorsed the planned defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, and other elected officials of the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso made the announcement in a short video posted on Facebook on Tuesday and shared by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, a development that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Kano State.

The endorsement marks a significant reversal by the former governor, who had previously opposed the move and accused Governor Yusuf and other NNPP office holders of betraying the mandate freely given to them by the people of Kano.

According to Vanguard, explaining his new stance, Kwankwaso said his decision was informed by the need to allow party members to freely exercise their political rights and to ease growing internal tensions within the NNPP in the state.

According to him, the persistent disagreements and political pressure within the party had made it necessary to prioritise stability and cohesion over prolonged confrontation.

3. ‘Tinubu Not Missing, He Is Focused On National Priorities ’ – APC Replies Peter Obi

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is missing or absent from governance, insisting that the President remains fully engaged in the affairs of the nation.

The ruling party’s reaction followed comments credited to the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, who questioned the visibility and whereabouts of the President amid Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, and made available to newsmen in Lagos, the APC, through its Lagos State Spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said President Tinubu was neither missing nor neglecting his constitutional responsibilities.

According to Oladejo, the President remains deeply involved in the complex business of governance, both at home and abroad.

4. US Strengthens Nigeria’s Security Efforts With Fresh Military Supplies

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has delivered military supplies to Nigerian security agencies in support of ongoing security operations across the country.

AFRICOM disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday, noting that the delivery underscores the security partnership between both countries.

“US forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” the command stated.

Nigeria has continued to battle rising insecurity in recent times, with cases of kidnapping and terrorist attacks reported in several parts of the country.

The delivery comes weeks after US forces carried out airstrikes on terrorist enclaves in North-West Nigeria on Christmas Day, as part of efforts to curb insurgency and violent activities.

5. Federal High Court Orders Fresh PDP Governorship Primary In Ekiti

A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has annulled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election held for the 2026 governorship poll, ordering the party to conduct a fresh primary election.

In his ruling, Justice Babs Kuewumi upheld allegations of irregularities raised by one of the aspirants, Prince Funso Ayeni, who had approached the court to challenge the conduct of the primary election.

Ayeni alleged that there was manipulation of the approved delegate list on the day of the election, a development he argued compromised the transparency, fairness, and internal democracy of the process.

The court, in its judgment, ruled that the primary election was marred by “gross abuse of process” and “a clear disregard” for the PDP’s electoral guidelines. Justice Kuewumi also emphasised that the violations were contrary to both the party’s constitution and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which binds all individuals and institutions involved in electoral processes.

The ruling marked a significant setback for the PDP as the party now faces the daunting task of conducting a fresh primary election in preparation for the 2026 gubernatorial race.

6. Fubara: President Tinubu Controls Lagos From The Palm Of His Hands – Fayose

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, has disagreed with the claim by Governor Siminalayi Fubara that he is the “001” of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

Fayose argued that being the Governor does not give any individual automatic political leadership in the state.

To buttress his point, Naija News reports that Fayose compared the declaration by Governor Fubara with the political leadership in Lagos State, arguing that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu cannot lay claim to being the ultimate political leader of the state.

According to Fayose, the political leadership in Lagos State rests firmly under the control of President Bola Tinubu.

To drive home his point, Fayose, who spoke on Tuesday during an interview with Arise News, cited the recent impeachment and reinstatement of the Lagos State House of Assembly speaker, describing the reversal as evidence of Tinubu’s political control in Lagos State.

7. Portable Arraigned In Court Over Assault, Theft Charges, Denied Bail

Controversial singer, Portable, was arraigned on Monday at the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, on a nine-count criminal charge that includes assault, theft, causing harm, and resisting arrest.

Confirming the charges, Ogun police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, told TheCable Lifestyle that the charges were related to a series of incidents involving the singer, including an alleged assault on his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, and others.

The singer’s arraignment follows the release of a viral video on Sunday, which showed him in police custody. The video was reportedly linked to a complaint filed by Ashabi Simple, who accused the singer of assault.

The prosecution alleged that Portable attacked Ashabi along with several police officers and other individuals at his bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area on New Year’s Day.

In addition to the assault charge, Portable is accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300, valued at ₦12 million, which belonged to Ileyemi Damilola.

8. You Have Lived The Best Part Of Your Life Why Do You Want Mine To Revolve Around Chaos – Regina Daniels To Ned Nwoko

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels has reacted after her close friend, Ann, was arrested in Lagos.

Naija News reports that in a series of Instagram story posts shared on Tuesday, Regina questioned the reason behind Ann’s arrest and linked it to her personal issues with her estranged husband, Senator Ned Nwoko.

She expressed worry about Ann’s safety and claimed the arrest was not carried out through proper legal means.

Regina stated that the situation had taken a troubling turn, saying that what began as a domestic violence matter had shifted into other accusations.

She explained that Ann had previously been accused of supplying drugs, an allegation she said was later cleared without confrontation.

According to her, the new claim of theft only surfaced after she chose to address issues calmly rather than engage in conflict.

The actress also said that her former partner was determined to keep her life filled with tension despite having already achieved much in his own life.

She accused him of repeatedly changing accusations and creating ongoing drama around her and those close to her.

Regina further stated that she had many private and public experiences she could share but chose to hold back, believing that doing so might only fuel what she described as a pattern of attention-seeking behaviour.

She concluded by questioning the purpose of the continuous public disputes and what the end goal might be.

9. Alex Iwobi Reveals Why Super Eagles Are Flying At AFCON 2025

Alex Iwobi has revealed that the driving force behind Nigeria’s flawless run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not simply tactics or talent, but a deep sense of unity within the squad.

The Fulham midfielder spoke with emotion as the Super Eagles prepare for a blockbuster semi-final against hosts Morocco on Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Nigeria have been the standout side of the tournament, winning all five matches, scoring a competition-high 14 goals and conceding just four. It is already the most prolific AFCON campaign in the country’s history, eclipsing the 12 goals scored at the 2000 edition.
