Algeria Coach Vladimir Petkovic Plays Down Quarter-Final Place, Eyes Nigeria Test
Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic has played down his team’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting it represents little more than a necessary step in a wider rebuilding effort.
The Desert Foxes booked their place in the last eight on Tuesday night after a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time win over DR Congo. Rather than dwell on the result, Petkovic immediately shifted focus to Saturday’s showdown with Nigeria in Marrakesh.
It took a flash of quality late in extra time to separate the sides after a tense and goalless 90 minutes. Adil Boulbina, introduced in the second half, made the decisive impact in the 118th minute, striking just five minutes after coming off the bench.
The forward cut in from the right and bent a fine effort beyond goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau, who had produced a series of outstanding saves to keep DR Congo in the contest for long spells.
Despite the dramatic finish, Petkovic was keen to strike a calm note, mindful of Algeria’s recent disappointments at the tournament. Since lifting their second continental title in 2019, the North Africans have failed to make it out of the group stages at the next two AFCON editions.
“Qualifying was important, and now we will think about the next match against Nigeria,” the coach said after the victory.
Nigeria head into the quarter-finals in a confident mood after sweeping aside Mozambique 4-0 on Monday, a result that reinforced their status as one of the tournament’s most dangerous sides.
Petkovic has consistently framed Algeria’s campaign as a work in progress rather than a title charge. That message has not changed, even with his impressive record of 19 wins from 24 matches since taking charge.
“I never promise anything. What I can assure Algerians is that the team will wear the national team jersey with pride and be courageous,” he said.
“Unity is crucial. We must have the support of the entire nation. If we are divided, achieving success will be difficult.”
Saturday’s encounter will rekindle memories of the sides’ last AFCON meeting, the semi-final of the 2019 tournament. On that occasion, Algeria edged Nigeria 2-1 thanks to a memorable late free kick from Riyad Mahrez before going on to claim the trophy.
Since that triumph, Algeria have struggled to recapture their best form on the continental stage, while Nigeria reached the final of the most recent edition in the Ivory Coast. Those contrasting recent histories set the stage for a compelling quarter-final with momentum, pride and revival all on the line.
