Super Eagles Of Nigeria Threaten Strike Over Unpaid AFCON 2025 Bonuses
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are embroiled in an off-field dispute at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, threatening to boycott training ahead of their quarterfinal clash against Algeria.
Despite their flawless record at the tournament, winning all four of their group and knockout stage matches, the Super Eagles players and coaching staff have reportedly not received their win bonuses. The victories came against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and, most recently, Mozambique, where Nigeria produced an emphatic 4-0 triumph.
Sports journalist Olúwashínà Okeleji confirmed the situation, wrote on 𝕏: “Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on #AFCON2025 bonus payments. Win bonuses from four matches – vs Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received. Squad remain focused but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved.”
The Super Eagles, who top Group C and have scored more goals than any other team in the tournament, were due to travel to Marrakech on Thursday ahead of their quarterfinal tie. However, unless their demands are addressed, they plan to remain in Fez and have already refused to take part in training sessions.
This is not the first time the Nigerian squad has taken such action. In November 2025, ahead of crucial World Cup playoffs against Gabon, the players staged a strike over unpaid dues, which was resolved within 24 hours.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has faced criticism in recent years for delayed payments to players and staff, with reports suggesting that even head coach Eric Chelle was owed outstanding fees before the tournament began.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are scheduled to meet Algeria in the quarter-final stage of the AFCON 2025 at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
