Former England International Arrested On Suspicion Of Attempted Rape

An unnamed former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested at Stansted Airport after his ex-partner accused him of attempted rape.

The retired Premier League player, who represented the Three Lions during the 2010s, was stopped by Border Force officers on Sunday night as he passed through passport control for a budget flight. Checks reportedly revealed that he was wanted over a non-recent allegation linked to his former relationship.

A source quoted by The Sun said: “He was walking through passport control when he was discreetly pulled aside by Border Force. There was clearly an issue, and he was led away.”

Essex Police were alerted, and officers travelled to the airport where the player, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was taken into custody.

He was moved to a nearby police station where officers collected his fingerprints, DNA and photograph before he was placed in a cell to await legal representation and questioning.

The arrest has caused surprise among those familiar with the case, particularly as the ex-footballer has been seen at several public events in recent weeks. A source added: “It’s bizarre that he was arrested at the airport when he has been quite visible in public recently.”

The complaint was made several weeks ago, prompting a police investigation. According to reports, the woman involved has been interviewed by specialist officers trained in sexual offences and has been offered counselling and support.

After being questioned for several hours, the former Premier League star was released on bail while detectives continue to examine the allegation.

In a statement, Essex Police said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our inquiries.”
