Unpacking The Nnamdi Kanu Controversy: The Man, The Movement, The Mayhem,
Across the Southeast, the insecurity situation keeps circling back to one name, and that is the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The Federal Government accused the agitator of inciting violence in the Southeast via his broadcast on Radio Biafra. An operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), while testifying against Kanu in court, alleged that between 170 and 200 security operatives were killed in the South-East under the directive of the IPOB leader.
History Of Kanu’s Current Court Case
Naija News reports that Kanu was sentenced today, November 20, 2025, to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The verdict comes after a long-running trial in which the agitator was found guilty on seven counts, mostly relating to terrorism, including issuing sit-at-home orders, incitement, and directing violence.
Kanu’s current legal battle began after he was re-arrested in June 2021 in Kenya, an operation widely criticized as an unlawful rendition. Since his return, the DSS has maintained that Kanu directed IPOB activities that contributed to unrest in the South-East, including sit-at-home orders and attacks on security operatives.
Killings, Sit-at-home, And Rising Fear In The Southeast
A report by Amnesty International in September 2027 disclosed that more than 1,844 people in the southeast were killed between January 2021 and June 2023.
The report stated that the violence in the region was a combination of political and criminal attacks, involving multiple actors such as IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), so-called “unknown gunmen,” cult groups, and state-backed forces like Ebube Agu.
Amnesty noted that the situation can be summarised into a single narrative of secessionist agitation, even though various groups are involved.
A separate report by SBM Intelligence claimed that the sit-at-home order by IPOB has led to the death of over 700 people in the region over the past four years.
The report alleged that the fatalities resulted from the killing of civilians who defied the weekly stay-at-home order every Monday and on other specific days, as well as from clashes between IPOB and Nigerian security forces.
“IPOB’s enforcement tactics, including arson, looting, and targeted assassinations, have created a climate of fear.
“While there was a high rate of compliance with sit-at-home orders in 2021 (82.61%), surveys reveal that actual support is much lower (29%) now, with many complying under duress,” the report said.
In May 2024, Aba witnessed one of the deadliest incidents when conflicting sit-at-home directives issued by IPOB and the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) sparked armed clashes.
The confrontation led to the death of at least 11 people, including five soldiers and six civilians, with one person injured.
Reports indicated that unknown gunmen attacked Nigerian Army personnel stationed at Obikabia Junction.
Between 2021 and 2025, a new report by SBM Intelligence recorded 332 attacks linked to IPOB and its enforcement of sit-at-home orders, resulting in 776 deaths.
Calls Linking Kanu’s Release To The Southeast
There has been speculation that the release of Kanu would put an end to the violence in the South-East.
Supporters claimed that, as the leader of IPOB, Kanu holds significant influence over the group and its armed wing, the ESN.
Nigerian activist and lawyer, Omoyele Sowore, has stated that Kanu’s leadership is pivotal, noting that much of the unrest stems from his detention rather than purely from criminal or political motives.
The governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has repeatedly stated that he is engaging President Tinubu to secure Kanu’s freedom.
In September 2025, Otti said all Southeast governors are involved in behind-the-scenes negotiations to release Kanu, although not all their actions are public.
The governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, has supported the call for Kanu’s release; however, he stated that he does not link it directly to the security crisis in the Southeast.
According to Soludo, the demand for Kanu’s freedom should be viewed separately from the region’s security challenges
Kanu Holds The Key To Peace – Chief Kuye
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Naija News, a veteran politician and former Deputy Director of Volunteer and Support Groups of the 2023 Presidential Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Chief Taiwo Kuye has asserted that the influence of Nnamdi Kanu in calming the insecurity situation in the southeast should not be underestimated.
“Nnamdi Kanu is never a criminal. Everything they did against Nnamdi kanu contravened the laws of Nigeria. You went to Kenya, abducted the guy, and brought him to Nigeria.
“You did not seek extradition. You did not seek for anything. You just, it was an abduction by the state, you know? So if all these idiots can be pardoned, then what is Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu ? He’s a freedom fighter, he’s fighting for his people.
“And there we go, he cannot see his people suffering and will not talk. This is a country where ethnicity reigns and he knows that from where he came from, there are a lot of setbacks from that. And he’s shouting out.
“And there is a lot of oppression in that area. He’s shouting out. And there’s nothing bad in talking.
“The next thing for you government is for you to charge him with treason because he’s talking. He’s talking for freedom for his people. You know, this country, this government is irresponsible.”
Do you sincerely believe that freeing Kanu would ease the insecurity in the Southeast?
“Yes, as it is today. You don’t understand the position of Odumegwu Ojukwu in the States. He was like the arrow head of the East, if you are with me.
“Today, Nnamdi Kanu is in that position. So, forget it, whatever any other person in the East will be talking about. They may be young, but we are the old ones.
“I don’t know the ones eating and serving under Bola Tinubu there. The very stupid, naive minister of works. Who doesn’t know anything to do? Other than , I’m stealing money.
“Is he not an eastern man? Is he not from an Igbo extraction? He is now. They cannot stick out their neck and say, look, my Mr. President, my people are suffering. So, I have to talk.
“They can’t do it because they are eating pawpaw and oranges. They can’t. But once he is free, I know there will be eventual peace in that zone.
“There will be peace in the East. Because particularly the youth, the majority of the Eastern leaders now see nnamdi Kanu as their prime leader. None of them can come out now.
“Once the guy is released, there will be peace in the East. That I know very well.”
