Calvin Bassey Reflects On Super Eagles’ World Cup Heartbreak
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has opened up about Nigeria’s disappointment following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
The Super Eagles’ hopes ended on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco, when they lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo in the playoff final.
Calvin Bassey was solid throughout the match, marshalling Nigeria’s defence with composure. However, the opening penalty of the shootout proved costly.
The Fulham defender who was tasked with taking the first kick saw his shot sail over the crossbar, setting the tone for the tense shootout that ultimately went against the Super Eagles.
Speaking briefly to reporters after the match, Bassey said, “It was nice. A lot happened but it is just what it is.”
Naija News reports that the Super Eagles had taken an early lead through a deflected strike from Frank Onyeka in the third minute, but Meschack Elia’s close-range finish in the 32nd minute restored parity.
The match remained tied through extra time, sending it to penalties, where the Super Eagles missed three crucial kicks.
This defeat marks the first time Nigeria will miss back-to-back FIFA World Cups since 1986 and 1990. Bassey was the only Nigerian player to feature in all twelve matches during the qualifying campaign.
Following the setback, Bassey’s focus will now return to club football in England.
Fulham are set to face Sunderland in the Premier League next weekend, a match that could see Bassey come up against DR Congo midfielder Noah Sadiki once again, provided both players are fit.
