Ghana Match Nigeria’s World Cup Wins Record

Ghana joined Nigeria as the most successful African teams in FIFA World Cup history after a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama in their opening Group L match on Thursday.

Naija News reports that the match which took place at Toronto Stadium looked destined to end goalless until Caleb Yirenkyi scored in the fifth minute of added time. Brandon Thomas-Asante burst down the left wing, beat his marker and delivered a low pass across goal for Yirenkyi, who calmly turned the ball home from close range to seal all three points for the Black Stars.

The victory handed Ghana a winning start to their 2026 World Cup campaign and moved them level on points with England at the top of Group L ahead of next week’s second round of fixtures.

It was a cruel outcome for Panama, who matched Ghana for much of the game and came within moments of securing what would have been their first-ever point at a World Cup finals. The Central Americans, appearing at only their fourth tournament since making their debut in 2018, defended resolutely before conceding at the death.

Beyond the result, the win carried added significance for Ghana. The Black Stars now have six victories from 16 World Cup matches, equalling Nigeria’s long-standing African record of six wins from 21 games.

Nigeria and Ghana now sit jointly at the summit of Africa’s World Cup winners’ chart. Cameroon remain next with five victories from 26 matches, although the Indomitable Lions failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament. Morocco are also on five wins and could move beyond both Ghana and Nigeria before the competition ends.

Senegal, despite opening their campaign with defeat to France, boast one of the continent’s strongest records, having earned five victories from only 13 World Cup matches since their memorable debut in 2002.

Ghana’s rise on the global stage began at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where they reached the round of 16. Four years later, they came within touching distance of the semi-finals before suffering a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Uruguay in one of the tournament’s most memorable matches.
