La Liga President, Javier Tebas Lashes Out After Cancellation Of Barcelona Vs Villarreal Miami Clash

La Liga president Javier Tebas has launched a furious attack on what he calls the “provincial mindset” that led to the cancellation of the much-debated Barcelona vs Villarreal match in Miami.

The December 20 fixture at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium was meant to mark a historic moment, the first-ever European top-flight league game to be played on American soil.

However, Naija News reports that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) scrapped the plan on Tuesday after weeks of player protests and growing resistance from clubs.

“Today, Spanish football has lost an opportunity to advance, project itself globally, and strengthen its future,” Tebas wrote on X.

“The defence of ‘tradition’ is invoked from a narrow-minded and provincial perspective, while the true traditions of European football are threatened by decisions by the governing institutions, which year after year destroy national leagues.”

He accused the federation and certain clubs of holding the sport back at a time when other European leagues are boldly expanding their global presence.

“Spanish football deserved to look to the future with ambition, not fear,” Tebas said, adding that La Liga “will continue working, with rigour and conviction, to keep Spanish football competitive.”

For months, Tebas had championed the Miami project as a key part of his long-term strategy to globalise Spanish football. The match was seen as a way to reach new audiences and secure fresh commercial partnerships, particularly in the lucrative North American market.

Instead, the league now faces questions about coordination, communication, and leadership. Villarreal officials revealed they only learned of the cancellation “ten minutes before kick-off” of their Champions League clash against Manchester City.

Players, too, had expressed discontent. Over the weekend, they staged silent protests by refusing to play for the first 15 seconds of league games. Their concerns centred on logistics and transparency, questions about travel schedules, rest periods, and insurance remained unanswered for weeks.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick admitted his squad was “not happy” with the decision to play abroad, while Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal labelled the plan a “stain” on the competition.
