U-20 World Cup: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles To Face Argentina In Round Of 16

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have sealed their place in the Round of 16 at the 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a battling 1-1 draw against Colombia in the early hours of today, October 6.

The match, played at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca, was a tense affair that tested both sides’ resilience. Nigeria had goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt to thank in the first half, with the shot-stopper pulling off two vital saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to deny Colombia an early lead.

Despite Colombia’s bright start, the Flying Eagles carved out more chances going forward. Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi and Suleman Sani were constant threats, with their efforts rattling the upright more than once as the South Americans struggled to contain Nigeria’s attacking pace.

Colombia eventually broke through in the 51st minute when Kener Gonzalez latched onto Neyser Villareal’s pass and calmly slotted home. But Nigeria refused to buckle under pressure. Defender Odinaka Okoro nearly equalised with a powerful header in the 76th minute before the breakthrough finally arrived.

In the 86th minute, captain Daniel Bameyi showed nerves of steel as he converted from the penalty spot after Maigana’s goal-bound shot was handled inside the area. The Flying Eagles almost snatched victory late on, but Arierhi’s effort in the 89th minute was blocked at close range.

The result ensured Nigeria’s safe passage to the knockout stages, where they will face Argentina at the iconic Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago on Wednesday. It will be a repeat of their quarter-final clash at the last U-20 World Cup in Argentina, where the Flying Eagles stunned the hosts 2-0 in San Juan.

Elsewhere, Colombia will face South Africa in the Round of 16, while Norway lock horns with Paraguay.
