Flying Eagles Coach Aliyu Zubairu Reacts After Hard-Fought Win Over Saudi Arabia
Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has hailed his players’ determination following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Saudi Arabia at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
“The players made up their minds that they had to go all out for the three points here, and that is what motivated them,” Zubairu told FIFA.com after the match.
“Now it’s simple: we have to go all out for the three points against Colombia. It’s as simple as that.”
During the match at Estadio Fiscal de Talca in Chile on Friday morning, Nigeria raced into the lead through Nasiru Salihu and Amos Ochoche, but Saudi Arabia responded with goals from Amar Al Yuhaybi and Halal Hajj to keep the contest alive.
Captain Daniel Bameyi proved to be the difference-maker, holding the defence together while also stepping up to convert a stoppage-time penalty that sealed the crucial win.
His commanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
The Flying Eagles had come into the encounter under pressure after losing their opening game to Norway. Friday’s win has now revived their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
With Colombia up next on Monday morning, Zubairu’s side will need another disciplined performance to secure qualification.
