Ese Brume Denies Receiving $30,000 In Support From The National Sports Commission After Accident
Nigerian long jumper Ese Brume has debunked reports claiming she received $30,000 from the National Sports Commission (NSC) after her near-death accident in the United States in 2024.
The false claim was promoted by TeamNigeriaUK3, a popular Instagram page that tracks Nigerian athletes abroad.
In a post credited to Tope Ashaolu, the account suggested the NSC had stepped in with financial support following Ese Brume’s crash.
Brume wasted no time correcting the narrative. Taking to her Instagram story, she wrote:
“Just to be clear, NSC did not give me any $30,000. Please get your facts straight. Thanks,” tagging the account directly.
The 29-year-old had survived a horrific accident when her car nearly plunged off a bridge, an incident that left her physically hurt and emotionally shaken.
The timing could not have been worse, as the crash abruptly ended her season and left doubts about whether she could return to the highest level of competition.
When the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo came around, Brume forced her way back onto the track, though she was far from her best. She placed 10th in her qualifying group and 19th overall, results that stood in stark contrast to her usual podium-level performances.
Her coach, Kayode Yaya, admitted he had advised her to skip the event.
“I told her she had nothing to prove, but she said she needed to clear the fear out of her mind and get back into the game. It was more about her mental recovery than performance,” Yaya told Brilla FM.
He described her decision to compete as a brave step in her rehabilitation, noting that simply showing up after such trauma was a victory in itself.
Note that Ese Brume has been representing Nigeria since her teenage years. She has won close to 20 medals across major competitions between 2015 and 2025.
