NPFL Matchday 5 Results: Enyimba Stay Top, Shooting Stars Record First Win, Nasarawa United Shine Away

Enyimba Football Club kept their place at the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a pulsating 3-2 victory over Bendel Insurance in Aba on Sunday.

The People’s Elephant, who are chasing their tenth league crown, had to dig deep in front of their home supporters to claim all three points in a NPFL match that swung back and forth.

Insurance stunned the Aba crowd with an early breakthrough when Chinedu Nwosu found the net inside the opening three minutes. Enyimba, however, responded through former Sunshine Stars winger Abiodun Joseph, who levelled the score in the 18th minute.

The visitors silenced the stadium again on the hour mark as Wisdom Udom restored their lead. But the home side refused to back down. Kalu Nweke equalised from the penalty spot six minutes later before Chidera Michael sealed the comeback in the 70th minute with a composed finish that sent the fans into raptures.

The win keeps Enyimba unbeaten after five matches.

In Ibadan, Shooting Stars finally gave their fans something to cheer about, recording their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over newcomers Kun Khalifat FC.

Right-back Gali Falke opened the scoring in the seventh minute, and Sodiq Ibrahim doubled the advantage shortly after the restart. Kun Khalifat pulled one back in the 76th minute through Henry Ezeonye, but the Oluyole Warriors held on.

It was a goal fest in Minna, where Niger Tornadoes overpowered Ikorodu City 4-2. Tornadoes stormed into a three-goal lead inside 20 minutes thanks to strikes from Ismail Sarki, Abba Khalid, and Abdulaziz Dalhatu.

Ikorodu reduced the deficit through Musa Maliq just after halftime, but Shehu Dabai stretched Tornadoes’ lead in the 65th minute. Tosin Oyedokun’s penalty in the 73rd gave the visitors a consolation, but Tornadoes walked away deserving winners.

Bayelsa United’s struggles deepened in Yenagoa as they slumped to a second consecutive home defeat, falling 2-1 to Nasarawa United. Mustapha Jawad gave the hosts a first-half lead in the 36th minute, but Ekeson Okrorie equalised before the break. Collins Onovuke struck late to hand the Solid Miners a precious away win.

Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors edged Warri Wolves 1-0, while four games were postponed due to the teams’ participation in continental competitions: Rivers United, Remo Stars, Kwara United, and Abia Warriors.

New boys Barau FC remain without a win, while Plateau United, Kun Khalifat, and Rangers International are already in the relegation zone.
