Japan Set For Second Women’s World Cup Trophy In 12 Years After Beating Norway

Japan continue their unbeaten run in the 2023 Women’s World Cup as they ended the journey of Norway in the round of 16 with a 3-1 victory.

Japan who won the 2011 Women’s World Cup recorded three wins in the group stage of the 2023 edition and have now sealed their place in the quarter-finals courtesy of their triumph over Norway earlier today, August 5.

During the round of 16 clash against Norway, Japan had a dream start when their opponent, Ingrid Engen, diverted Hinata Miyazawa’s cross into her own net. However, Norway equalized the score shortly after with a goal from Guro Reiten.

Risa Shimizu’s goal, which was deflected, gave Japan the lead once more before Hinata Miyazawa’s third goal gave her team the lead and sealed the victory.

Although they had played poorly for the majority of the game, Norway nearly produced a thrilling end when Karina Saevik’s strong header was brilliantly stopped by goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.

As it stands, Miyazawa is now the highest goalscorer in the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with five goals.

In the round of eight, Japan will either play Sweden or the current world champions, the United States.

Japan hopes to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time in 12 years after playing outstandingly up to this stage.

Without dropping a point, they breezed through the group stage and won their final game 4-0 against fellow quarterfinalists Spain.

They won despite only controlling 23% of the ball, playing outstanding counterattacking football to demonstrate their tenacity and ability to overcome formidable opponents.
