The senior women’s cricket team of Nigeria, the Female Yellow Greens, defeated Rwanda in Lagos on Sunday to emerge winners of the 2023 Nigeria Cricket Federation Women’s T20i championship.

The top two teams in the five-team event faced off against one another at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in a rerun of the championship game from the previous year.

Nigeria played the defending champions twice in two days on matchday five of this year’s championship. In the final on Sunday, the Female Yellow Greens got the chance to avenge the defeat they suffered in last year’s final.

After winning the toss, Nigeria’s captain Blessing Etim decided to bat first.

After a shaky start in the power play, Salome Sunday and skipper Etim concluded the first inning with some outstanding batting, which enabled Nigeria to surge to 99 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs to the delight of the audience.

In the second inning, Nigeria had to successfully field the ball to keep the score down.

Gisele Ishimwe of Rwanda, who came into the batting, scored 31 runs (48), while captain Diane Biemenyimana added 15 runs (19), but Nigeria’s Peity Lucky and Racheal Samson, who each took three wickets, caused the most misery for the East Africans.

The defending champions, Rwanda, needed to score 90 runs while losing nine wickets to win.

Salome Sunday’s outstanding batting allowed Nigeria to win the opening inning; she scored 47 runs and was named player of the match due to her outstanding performance.
