Three Times Top Law Enforcement Agents Have Been Sentenced To Jail

The legal system in Nigeria in the last few months has affirmed that no one is above the law following, its ruling which has seen top law enforcement agents sentenced to jail.

Actions and decisions of the likes of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, has seen the court order that they are locked up.

The court in different cases was forced to sentence the law enforcement agents to jail following their decision to ignore court directives and orders.

It is quite disappointing that the law enforcement agents who are expected to hold forth the law are the ones disobeying the directives of the court.

Naija News has deemed it fit to share cases of law enforcement agents being sentenced to jail.

1. Court Sentences IGP Baba To Three Month In Prison For Contempt

On November 29, Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court, Abuja sentenced the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to three months in prison for disobeying a court order.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Olajuwon issued the order following a suit filed by a former police officer, Patrick Okoli who claimed he was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigeria Police Force.

2. Court Charges EFCC Chairman, Bawa For Contempt

Also, Justice Chizoba Oji of a High Court Abuja convicted the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, for contempt and ordered that he should be committed to prison at Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

The judge held that Bawa was in contempt of the order of the court made on November 21, 2018, directing the commission to return to an applicant, his Range Rover and the sum of N40 million.

3. Court Orders Arrest Of Chief Of Army Staff For Contempt

A Niger State High Court sitting in Minna has ordered the arrest of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Faruk Yahaya, for disobeying a court order.

Justice Halima Abdulmalik said the order followed upon hearing the motion on notice brought before the court pursuant to order forty-two rule ten of the Niger State High Court Civil procedure 2018.

The presiding judge also ruled that the Commandant Training and Doctrine Command in Minna, Major General Olugbenga Olabanji, should be arrested for the same offence.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the order is commuting Yahaya and Olabanji to be kept in Minna correctional custody for contentions of the order of this court on 12 October 2022.

The judge ruled that they should remain in custody until they purge themselves of contempt.
