PDP Crisis: 'How NWC Forced Ayu To Step Down As National Chairman'

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may prevail on the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu to consider resigning from office.

There are indications that the governors are planning to take steps to douse the tension in the party ahead of the 2023 race.

A source that spoke with Nigerian Tribune said the move by the governors is a follow-up to a meeting between the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar and the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The meeting which was held in London had the presence of Wike’s allies, the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

The source further stated that the rift between Wike and Atiku’s camp is one of the factors delaying the composition of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

Another source said, “It has been technically agreed that Ayu should step aside. But whether he will agree to resign or not depends on him.”

The source, however, said the possibility of the position going to the South-West if Ayu decides to resign is slim.

He said, “The acting chairman could come from any of the geopolitical zones in the South if Ayu resigns since PDP wants to win convincingly in the general election. This is an unusual time for the party.”
