Maradona’s Hand Of God Shirt Sold To ‘Anonymous’ For $8.93m

The shirt which was worn by late Argentine legend, Diego Maradona when he scored the goal popular described as the ‘hand of god’ has been sold for 7.14 million pounds ($8.93 million).

The shirt which was sold on Wednesday marked a new auction record for an item of sports memorabilia.

The Argentina captain wore the No. 10 jersey in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England in Mexico.

The highly skilled player in the second half of the match against England scored a goal with his hand.

Maradona few minutes after scoring the goal which is widely called the ‘hand of god’ dribbled from his half to score a goal which is celebrated in football till today.

Maradona gave his shirt after the match to England midfielder, Steve Hodge who disclosed last month that he was putting it up for auction after 19 years on display at England’s National Football Museum.

Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables, Brahm Wachter said, “This historic shirt is a tangible reminder of an important moment not only in the history of sports but in the history of the 20th century.”

He disclosed that the buyer of Maradona’s shirt was anonymous.

The sale broke the previous record for sports memorabilia set by the original autograph manuscript of the Olympic Manifesto from 1892, which went for $8.8 million in 2019.

There have been complications surrounding the sale of the shirt with Maradona’s daughter and ex-wife saying Hodge received the shirt Maradona wore in the first half of the match.

Sotheby’s said they used photo-matching technology to “conclusively” match the shirt to both goals by “examining unique details on various elements of the item, including the patch, stripes, and numbering”.
