Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has rejected the idea of zoning the 2023 presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to a particular region.

Naija News reports that there have been calls on the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone their presidential ticket to the South, with some individuals asking the major political parties to micro-zone it to the South-east.

But in an interview with Channles Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayemi said he understands why those from a particular zone who feel marginalized are clamoring for the presidency.

He however stated that Nigeria is multicultural, multireligious and multiethnic, adding that “one of the equilibrating mechanisms is to ensure that those in leadership represent the mosaic that the country is”.

Fayemi stated that candidates from any part of the country can participate in the APC primaries ahead of the next general election.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) also asked President Muhammadu Buhari not to sack the nation’s Service Chiefs.

He advised President Buhari to instead retire the Service Chiefs as they have given their best to tackle insecurity.

The former minister urged the service chiefs in the country to recommend their successors to President Buhari.

He said it is not about the sacking of the service chiefs but it is about “transitioning them out of their current responsibilities into retirement”.

Fayemi stated that some of the nation’s security chiefs may want to step aside but they wouldn’t want to be seen as jumping ship.
