Senator Shehu Sani, the former Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly has warned the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum against returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their homeland.

The former lawmaker in a post on Saturday morning on his Twitter page, described the Borno State governor as a bold, blunt and passionate person but disagreed with his plans to resettle IDPs back to their communities.

He lamented that the plan by Zulum to resettle the IDPs can be likened to ‘throwing the sheep to the Tiger’.

He wrote: “Borno Governor is Bold, blunt and passionate about his people; but returning IDPs is throwing the Sheep to the Tiger.”

Naija News recalls Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, was last week Saturday received by over one thousand internally displaced persons from Baga town in northern Borno State.

Information gathered revealed that over one thousand displaced persons returned home on Saturday.

The returnees were given ten thousand naira (N10,000) and a bag of rice each to start life afresh.

Further report disclosed that Governor Zulum was in Baga town on Friday, spent two nights with the returnees under heavy security watch to supervise preparations for safe resettlement in the commercial town, which was earlier occupied by militants.

The Borno State Governor in his statement called on the returnees to be law-abiding and to give support and cooperate with the security operatives in other to enjoy their protection and safety.

He further stated that the state government will not abandon them but will continue to ensure that they are well-protected.

The Nigerian Army has also expressed its full support for the efforts of the Borno State Governor to repatriate the state’s refugees to their hometowns.

The statement came from the office of the Acting Director of Public Relations of the Nigerian Army Headquarters in Abuja, Col. Sagir Musa, in a press statement issued in Maiduguri on Tuesday, described the move by Governor Zulum as “right steps in the desired direction”.

Col. Musa added, “The Nigerian Army is fully in support of the ongoing efforts by the Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, to relocate our fellow countrymen and women who are internally displaced in the state back to their ancestral homes.

“Indeed the governor’s efforts are commendable and the right steps in the desired direction.”
