Coronavirus: More than 170,000 dead worldwide

The coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 170,368 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report established by Nigeria News from official sources Tuesday at 7 a.m.

More than 2,483,840 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 193 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 558,400 are now considered cured.

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in late February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 42,364 deaths for 787,901 cases. At least 72,858 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Italy with 24,114 deaths for 181,228 cases, Spain with 21,282 deaths (204,178 cases), France with 20,265 deaths (155,383 cases), and the United Kingdom with 16,509 deaths (124,743 cases).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic started in late December, officially counted a total of 82,758 cases (11 new between Monday and Tuesday), including 4,632 deaths (0 new), and 77,123 healings.

Europe totaled Tuesday at 7 a.m., 106,837 deaths for 1,216,075 cases, the United States and Canada 44,073 deaths (824,571 cases), Asia 7,169 deaths (172,863 cases), the Middle East 5,683 deaths (129,497 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 5,354 deaths (109,662 cases), Africa 1,161 deaths (23,251 cases), and Oceania 91 deaths (7,927 cases).
