Don Jazzy Speaks On Mavin Records ‘Dying’

Mavin Records Chief Executive Officer, Michael Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy, says the record label is not “dead” but just “faded” a bit.

Don Jazzy, is a Nigerian record producer, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur, said this in response to a question by a fan if the record label was dead.

Naija News reports that Don Jazzy co-founded the now-defunct record label Mo’ Hits Records in 2004, however, following the closure of the aforementioned record label, he set up Mavin Records on May 8, 2012.

Howbeit, since its formation, Mavin Records churned out hit songs from its artistes including “First Lady” Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Di’Ja, Dr Sid and D’Prince.

Surprisingly, only the duo of Savage and Banks have had major hit songs in the last three years, while Bello and late-entrant Johnny Drille have enjoyed minor hits.

To reach a pinnacle of the dry spell, Banks left the label in December 2018, citing the need to pursue bigger opportunities.

The singer had said: “Taking this bold step and moving on from Mavin Records onto bigger opportunities is something that, though not easy, is absolutely necessary because of my growth.

“I am very ecstatic about what the future holds and I cannot wait to share with everyone what new opportunities have come. Long Live Mavin Records.”

Speaking on the recent-years performance of his label, Don Jazzy tweeted: “Well we haven’t satisfied the high expectations you have so far.

“We have taken notes and suggestions from some very loyal fans and have been working on some great ideas. Pls, stay tuned during the year. Your feedbacks are always helpful.”

When asked for the reason why Banks left the label, the award-winning producer responded by saying: “Why do u graduate from secondary/university? People grow.”

In another tweet-query about whether Mavin is still alive, Don Jazzy said: “We never die. We just faint small. E Dey happen. Pray for us to recover if you can.”

Meanwhile, Wande Coal who was part of the inaugural set of Mavin artistes, left in 2013, a year after the formation of the outfit.
