Sickle cell patients have been advised to eat good diet rich in fruits and vegetables in order to replace lost cells in the body.

Prof. Obiageli Nnodu, the Director, Centre of Excellence for Sickle Disease Research and Training,University of Abuja gave this advice today wile fielding questions in an interview with the Newsmen in Abuja.

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disease due to the presence of an abnormal form of hemoglobin, namely hemoglobin S.

Hemoglobin is the molecule in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to the farthest areas of the body.

Sickle celll is very common through the world but majorly affects people whose forefathers hail from sub-saharan africa.

Nnodu said if people living with sickle cell disorders eat good diets and take enough water, it would allow their blood to flow well.

she stressed that adults living with it should take at least three liters of water everyday.

She also emphasised that people should know their genotype before marriage so as to avoidhaving offsprings with the disease.

She added that the university had set up a screening centre for children under the age of five.

She further advised people with the disease not to hide, but come out to get help and be educated on how to manage it.
