The outgoing national party chairman of the All Progressive Congress of Nigeria (APC), John Oyegun,  has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his performance in office. He also said it was a privilege to have served as the chairman of the All Progressive Congress party for four years.

Naija News Learnt That the outgoing chairman while delivering his speech at the ongoing APC National Convention holding in Abuja also said that though there were many challenges, tussles and fights within the party, he said the party members fought to agree.

He also appreciated the president, Muhammadu Buhari, the vice president Yemi Osinbajo, all the ministers and party members who had worked with him during his tenure.

While thanking them for their cooperation during his four years in service, he said “all of us are actors on this stage, we may have had our chances and in due time, we make our exit. “Today I am making my exit from the honour that you have bestowed on me to lead you for four years. Phase one of this party is over, phase two is about to begin and it is my hope that at the end of today we will have elected a worthy successor to carry the mantle, battle and leadership of these party.

Mr Oyegun served for four years and wanted to run for a second term. He, however, stepped down from the race for re-election.

Mr Oyegun, during his withdrawal from the race, said though he had the desire to re-contest as national chairman of the party, he decided that it is ultimately in the best interest of the party for him to withdraw from the race.

His decision paved way for the immediate past governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomole, to be the sole candidate vying for the post.

The APC initially wanted to extend the tenure of the Oyegun-led party executives by a year but later resolved to go ahead with elective congresses and convention after President Muhammadu Buhari sounded a note of warning over the possible consequences of such an action.

The outgoing chairman, however, wished his successor the very best of luck. “I wish my successor the very best of luck, and for the rest, we leave to history,” he said.
