Senior officials in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have vocally opposed the notion of Palestinian statehood, responding to reports of the United States’ efforts to foster a peace plan that includes establishing a Palestinian state. This stance marks a clear rejection of potential international moves aimed at resolving long-standing conflicts in the region following recent hostilities.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich articulated the government’s position unequivocally, dismissing the idea of rewarding Palestinians with statehood, especially with Jerusalem as its capital. His comments underscore a significant rift between Israel’s current administration’s policies and propositions reportedly being advanced by the U.S., alongside Arab nations such as Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. These countries are purportedly working on a post-war strategy that envisions a defined timeline for the creation of a Palestinian state.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to these developments by asserting that any political initiative lacking the immediate establishment of a Palestinian state as a full United Nations member is bound to fail. This statement reflects the Palestinian leadership’s longstanding demand for sovereignty and international recognition.

Several of Netanyahu’s cabinet members, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Education Minister Yoav Kisch, echoed Smotrich’s sentiments, labeling the concept of a Palestinian state post-October 7—a reference to the outbreak of the latest Gaza war—as catastrophic. The conflict, initiated by a Hamas-led assault, has seen a significant toll on human lives and infrastructure, with Israeli forces responding to the attack with an extensive military campaign.
