Nelson Chamisa Steps Down from Zimbabwe’s Main Opposition Party Amidst Political Turmoil

In a significant political development, Nelson Chamisa, the leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), announced his resignation, accusing the ruling party of hijacking the organization. This decision comes after a tumultuous period marked by internal party conflicts and external pressures.

Chamisa, a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics and a key rival to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, formed the CCC in 2022 after a legal dispute within the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). He claimed the ruling ZANU-PF party systematically dismantled his party by orchestrating the removal of numerous elected officials, including members of parliament and councilors, through various means.

In his statement, Chamisa expressed his intent to remain active in public service and hinted at new political endeavors, calling his supporters to embrace “fresh politics.” This move reflects the ongoing challenges faced by opposition parties in Zimbabwe, where accusations of authoritarian practices and suppression of dissent have been prevalent.
