France to Close Embassy in Niger Amidst Strained Relations Following Coup

France has announced plans to close its embassy in Niger indefinitely, a decision made following a coup in the country. This action is due to the embassy’s inability to carry out diplomatic tasks, primarily because of restrictions imposed by Niger’s ruling junta. The closure follows deteriorating relations between Niger and France, its former colonial ruler, after army officers overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum in July. France initially resisted the junta’s orders to expel French troops and its ambassador, Sylvain Itté, but later complied. The embassy has faced increasing operational constraints since the summer, leading to this closure decision.
