Egypt Gears Up for Presidential Elections Amid Economic Challenges and Predicted Outcomes

Egypt is in the midst of preparing for a crucial presidential election, set to take place from December 10 to 12. The election, which follows voting by Egyptians abroad from December 1 to 3, has garnered international attention due to its significance in the nation’s political history. Results are expected to be announced on December 18.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who has been in power since 2013, is widely expected to secure a third term. This comes despite the country’s economic challenges, including soaring inflation and a depreciating currency. Sisi, running as an independent candidate, faces three other contenders in the race: Farid Zahran of the Egyptian Social Democratic party, Abdel Sanad Yamama of the liberal Al Wafd party, and Hazem Omar of the Republican People’s Party.

The election is being closely monitored for its adherence to democratic norms. The National Election Authority (NEA) in Egypt is overseeing the process, with the election being held under the supervision of judges. Local and foreign civil society organizations are permitted to observe the voting.

This election is particularly notable following the constitutional amendments in 2019, which extended the presidential term to six years and allowed for a president to serve more than two consecutive terms. These amendments have enabled Sisi to run for a third term, which, if successful, could extend his rule until 2030.

Despite the preparations and the significance of the election, there has been criticism from rights groups and international observers regarding press freedom, the jailing of critics, and intimidation of potential opposition candidates. These concerns raise questions about the election’s fairness and the future of democratic transformation in Egypt.
