The United States Concerned About The ‘political Collapse’ In Edo State
The US Embassy in Nigeria has expressed concern over the “political crisis in Edo State”, which INEC is planning to hold in September.
“The United States is unhappy with the actions of politicians (in Edo),” the office said in a statement posted on its Twitter account on Friday.
The statement added that the United States would support Nigeria in its quest for democracy “as long as it is given to the Nigerian electorate”.
Tensions are running high in Nigeria’s south-eastern Edo State following the swearing-in of 14 members of the state assembly, who are trying to seize power.
Edo and Ondo states will hold gubernatorial elections in September and October respectively.
The United States says it views Nigeria as a “mother in Africa” and calls on all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, to ensure that elections are fair and peaceful.
