COVID-19: WHO Commends Africa For Having Least Cases, Deaths In The World

The World Health Organization (WHO) has commended Africa for being able to manage the COVID-19 pandemic despite obvious challenges.

The global health body also recalled Africa’s exploits in managing previous outbreaks and diseases.

WHO while commending Africa for having the least number of confirmed cases and lowest number of deaths relating to coronavirus, said the continent has been able to do this against all odds when compared with other continents that boast of better health systems.

The WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus gave the commendation at an online briefing on Monday noting that Africa has only 1.5% of the world’s reported cases and less than 0.1% of deaths.

He said: “Africa is the least-affected region globally in terms of the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths reported to WHO.”

Adding that Africa has been, “spared the scale of outbreaks we have seen in other regions.” and that African countries, “garnered a great deal of experience from tackling infectious diseases like polio, measles, Ebola, yellow fever, influenza and many more”.
