Jayden Adams: South African Government Confirms Death Of Bafana Bafana Star
The South African government has confirmed the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who died at the age of 25, just days after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Naija News reports that the country’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie announced the midfielder’s passing earlier today, July 11, describing it as a devastating loss for South African football while urging the public to avoid speculation over the circumstances surrounding his death.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
South African police have opened an investigation after the body of “a 25-year-old man was discovered at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning”. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of death.
McKenzie appealed for patience while investigations continue.
He said, “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.
“Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.”
Adams had only recently completed an impressive World Cup campaign, featuring in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time before bowing out to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
The midfielder’s World Cup journey was marked by personal heartbreak. He started South Africa’s 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic despite learning only hours before kick-off that his grandmother, Marianna, had died.
Adams began his senior career at Stellenbosch FC, becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020. He made 139 appearances before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he helped the Pretoria club win the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League.
He also represented South Africa at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, helping Bafana Bafana claim the bronze medal, and earned his senior international debut in 2022.
The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute to the midfielder.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction,” the union said.
“His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”
