Family Of Oyo Teacher Beheaded By Bandits Mourn As Others Regain Freedom

The family of Michael Oyedokun, one of the teachers killed during the abduction of pupils and staff members in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has expressed mixed emotions following the rescue of the remaining victims.

Naija News reports that the family said while it shared in the relief of those reunited with their loved ones, it would continue to live with the pain of Oyedokun’s death.

Reacting to the release of the abducted pupils and teachers on Friday, Oyedokun’s niece, Oluwabukolami, said the development could not erase the family’s grief.

Oluwabukolami, who has served as the family’s spokesperson since the incident, made the remarks in an Instagram post.

She congratulated the rescued victims and their relatives, describing their return as a moment of relief after weeks of fear and uncertainty.

Oluwabukolami stated, “They are finally home.

“My heart rejoices with every family that has been reunited with their loved ones after weeks of pain, fear, and uncertainty. Welcome home.”

She, however, said the family’s emotions were overshadowed by the reality that Oyedokun would never return.

She further stated, “But as others celebrate, my family mourns.

“My uncle, Mr Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, will never come home. He was taken from us, and his life was brutally cut short.”

Oluwabukolami said the rescue of the remaining victims brought some comfort but left the family with an enduring sense of loss.

She wrote, “Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever.

“Today, we celebrate those who returned, while remembering the one who never did.”

She paid tribute to the slain teacher, saying his memory would remain with the family.

“Rest in peace, Uncle Michael. You will never be forgotten,” she added.

The pupils and teachers were rescued on Friday after spending more than 50 days in captivity, bringing relief to their families and the affected school communities.
