INEC Replaces Yusuf, Uploads Agbo As NNPP National Chairman On It’s Portal
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), replacing the factional chairman, Bala Yusuf.
Naija News reports that the development was announced at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
A check by journalists also confirmed that Agbo’s name had been uploaded on INEC’s portal as the national chairman of the party.
The commission also updated its records with the names of other members of the party’s National Working Committee, including the National Secretary, Olaposi Oginni; National Treasurer, Prince Adetoyese Omokanye; National Financial Secretary, Anthony Apugo; and National Legal Adviser, Asuquo Ibok.
Leadership Tussle
The development marks a major turn in the leadership crisis that has rocked the opposition party since the 2023 general election, with rival factions laying claim to the control of the NNPP.
Addressing journalists, Agbo described the update on INEC’s portal as a validation of his leadership and a fresh beginning for the party.
“I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC.
“This development reinforces the legitimacy of the leadership of our great party and strengthens our preparations for future political activities. Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours.
“We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats,” The PUNCH quoted Agbo as stating.
Party Begins 2027 Preparations
Naija News reported earlier that INEC issued access codes to virtually all registered political parties to enable them to upload their candidates’ particulars to its nomination portal, with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the only exception as of Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
However, with the latest developments, Agbo said the NNPP had begun preparations for the 2027 general elections following INEC’s recognition of the new leadership.
According to him, the party has also commenced the process of uploading candidates in line with the timetable and guidelines of the electoral body.
“Following this achievement, the party has commenced the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 general elections in accordance with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission after receiving the access code recently.
“We are determined to present competent, credible and people-oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change,” he stated.
The NNPP chairman also called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and security agencies to address the country’s security challenges.
He urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve inter-agency cooperation in order to restore peace across the country.
He said, “We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians.
“The NNPP also urges the INEC to remain steadfast, impartial and committed to conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections come 2027.
“The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire.”
Yusuf reacts
When contacted for a reaction, Yusuf confirmed that he was aware of the development but said he was not in a position to speak on the matter in detail.
“Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details.
“Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja. I will release a statement,” he stated.
