Why Nigerian Men ‘Always’ Offer Women Money – Toke Makinwa Shares

Nollywood actress and media personality, Toke Makinwa, has faulted claims that modern Nigerian women are overly materialistic or mostly interested in relationships for financial gain.

Makinwa argued that romantic relationships between men and women had always involved some form of exchange, adding that the trend did not begin with modern Nigerian women.

Speaking during a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said relationships had been transactional “from time immemorial.”

She said, “From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the Garden of Eden, right from our parents’ days. And the degree at which it is happening now, I will blame the men. Sometimes, that [financial benefits] is all men have to offer.”

According to her, Nigerian women are often accused of being materialistic because many men approach relationships by using money as their main attraction.

‘Nigerian Men Don’t Have Game Aside Money’

Naija News reports that Makinwa further claimed that some Nigerian men rely heavily on their financial capacity because they lack other qualities needed to build romantic connections.

“Nigerian men don’t have games aside from money. Once a Nigerian man makes money, he starts throwing it at the hottest girls. Sometimes, you meet a man and you want to know him but he is offering you money,” she said.

The media personality added that some women developed materialistic expectations because men had repeatedly presented money as the major value they bring into relationships.

“Men have offered women strangest things and it made me realise that men feel cash is all they need to show you. Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands,” Makinwa added.
