We Need Laws That Make It Mandatory For Politicians’ Children To School In Nigeria – Akah Nnani
Nollywood actor, Akah Nnani, has called on Nigeria’s leaders to take responsibility for the state of education in the country, saying real change will only happen when those in power are also affected by the system they manage.
Naija News reports that he made the remarks during an interview on The Morayo Show with Morayo Afolabi-Brown while reacting to discussions around the “Olodo uprising.”
He said the issue with the education system is already known by everyone, but questioned whether Nigerians truly want it to continue in its current condition.
The actor said citizens must begin to demand accountability from those they elect into office.
Nnani noted that leaders often appear disconnected from the problems facing public schools, allowing the situation to remain unchanged for years.
He also suggested that lawmakers should introduce a rule requiring politicians to educate their children within Nigeria.
According to him, many public officials send their children abroad while public schools at home continue to struggle, which reduces their motivation to improve the system.
He said, “I think everybody already knows the problem. Do we want it to continue? No. Nigerians need to hold their leaders accountable. Lawmakers need to make it mandatory that the children of politicians do school here. We think that these politicians care about us. They don’t.
“And they’re not going to make it better until it begins to pinch them. Their children can’t be going abroad, and then our public schools are going, you know, bad. So I think that that’s the first step. Make sure that you hold your political leaders, hold your legislative arm accountable. Let your senators, your House of Reps, tell them what you want.”
