Alex Onyia: EdTech CEO Transforming Nigerian Education With Advocacy, Trainings And STEM Olympiads

In a country where conversations about education often revolve around systemic failures, government neglect, and declining standards, one man is quietly rewriting the narrative through action. Alex Onyia, founder and CEO of Educare, the leading K-12 education technology platform, has emerged as a formidable force in Nigerian education development.

Through his company, personal initiatives, bold advocacy, and data-driven interventions, Onyia is bridging gaps in access, quality, integrity, and global competitiveness. His efforts reached a major milestone with his recent sponsorship of Nigerian students to the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy.

Key Contributions to Nigerian Education

  • Building Educare as a Scalable EdTech Solution: Onyia founded Educare to modernise school operations and enhance learning outcomes. The platform now serves over 1 million students and 300,000 parents across Africa, providing tools for efficient school management, digital learning, predictive performance analytics, and improved teaching delivery.
  • STEM Curriculum Innovation and Global Partnerships: In early 2025, Onyia travelled to Switzerland and Eindhoven to scout partners for a world-class STEM curriculum tailored for Nigerian children (from Primary 1 to SS3). The initiative introduces early computing concepts, block programming, and advanced skills to boost cognitive development.
  • Organising Regional Olympiads and Talent Discovery: He launched and funded the South East Maths and Science Olympiad to identify and nurture gifted students, countering negative narratives and advancing excellence in the region.
  • Direct Sponsorship and Mentorship of Talented Students: Onyia personally funds and mentors high-potential students and teachers, providing opportunities for growth and global exposure. Examples include supporting students like Chidera Ikeoha from humble beginnings to academic excellence.
  • Advocacy for Accountability, Integrity, and Merit-Based Education: Onyia consistently speaks against exam malpractice, extortion, and “sorting” in schools, calling them national security threats that undermine competence and integrity.
  • Influencing UTME Review and Corrections (2025): In May 2025, following widespread outcry over unusually poor 2025 UTME results, Onyia publicly raised concerns using data from schools showing discrepancies between expected and actual performance. He argued for a technical review rather than assuming mass failure, petitioned officials, and was invited by JAMB to join a high-level review panel. His involvement contributed to scrutiny of the process, helping push for transparency and corrective measures for affected candidates.

Landmark Moment: Sponsoring Nigeria’s Representation at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy (July 2026)

Onyia’s most recent high-impact contribution is fully sponsoring a delegation of Nigerian students and teachers to the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome.

He personally covered all expenses for 3 students and 2 teachers (winners of the 2026 South East Maths Olympiad) to compete against 154 countries at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. Students like Egejurum Onyedikachi and Victor Onwubiko participated, with results expected around July 7.
