The 2026 FIFA World Cup has produced a string of historic milestones, with players, teams, coaches and goalkeepers rewriting the tournament’s record books.

Naija News reports that several national teams have also achieved unprecedented feats, while some milestones recorded at the tournament have received recognition from Guinness World Records.

According to a report released by FIFA after the group stage, the tournament had already become the biggest in World Cup history, attracting a record 4.64 million spectators across 72 matches.

The competition also averaged three goals per game during the period.

Individual records

  • Lionel Messi – Seven consecutive scoring matches: The Argentina captain became the first player in World Cup history to score in seven consecutive matches at the tournament.
