2027: ‘Public Confidence In INEC Has Hit A Historic Low’ – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lamented that public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has hit a historic low, and is no longer operating as an autonomous and transparent referee.

Naija News reports that PDP made this allegation in a statement posted on its verified 𝕏 handle on Tuesday.

The opposition party described INEC under Professor Joash Amupitan as an extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), doing its bidding to preserve the status quo in 2027.

According to the party, selective obedience to court orders, rulings and a persistent lack of transparency in electronic transmission systems have left the electorate with a chilling impression that INEC is no longer serving the citizens.

The party said, “INEC under Professor Joash Amupitan, increasingly behaves like an extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

“For any democracy to survive an economic depression, the public must believe that their pain can translate into political consequences via the ballot box.

“That belief requires an independent umpire. However, public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has hit a historic low.”

Meanwhile, INEC has granted access codes to nine registered political parties to enable them to upload their candidates’ names for the 2027 general elections.

The parties reportedly include the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), among others.

The candidates are expected to contest the presidential, governorship, Senate and House of Representatives elections, except in Kogi and Osun states, where governorship elections are conducted off-cycle.

A senior INEC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, dismissed reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had been denied access to the commission’s candidate nomination portal.
