Mario Balotelli Reveals Why He Is Backing Ghana At 2026 World Cup

Former Italy striker, Mario Balotelli, has revealed why he is supporting Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying his loyalty naturally shifted to the Black Stars after Italy failed to qualify for the tournament.

Mario Balotelli made his feelings clear as Ghana prepares for their round of 32 clash against Colombia following a spirited group-stage campaign.

After beating Panama 1-0 in their opening match, the Black Stars earned a goalless draw with England before narrowly losing 2-1 to Croatia. Their four-point haul was enough to see them progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Speaking on Men in Blazers, Balotelli explained why Ghana now have his full backing.

“There is no Italy, so I support Ghana,” the 35-year-old said on Men in Blazers. “Obviously, I’m from Ghana, and I’m proud of Ghana.”

Balotelli was born Mario Barwuah in Palermo, Sicily, to Ghanaian parents before being raised by the Balotelli family in northern Italy. He became an Italian citizen in 2008 and went on to represent the Azzurri at Euro 2012, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

His standout international moment came at Euro 2012, when his two goals against Germany sent Italy into the final. He later dedicated the brace to his foster mother, Silvia.

Despite his long association with Italian football, Balotelli has never hidden his Ghanaian roots, and with Italy absent from the 2026 World Cup, he is hoping the Black Stars can extend their impressive run.

Ghana will face Colombia in the round of 32 after the South Americans finished top of Group K ahead of Portugal, DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Balotelli, who now plays for UAE club Al-Ittifaq FC, previously featured for Inter Milan, AC Milan, Manchester City and Liverpool.
