Sowore Reveals Plan After Court Sent Him To Prison

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, has said his detention will not deter him from his activism after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday.

Naija News had earlier reported that Justice Mohammed Umar issued the remand order on Monday following the revocation of Sowore’s bail last week.

The decision came after the court dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking the judge’s withdrawal from the case.

Sowore is facing charges arising from allegations by the Department of State Services over public comments in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

Reacting to the ruling, the human rights activist said he remained undeterred and would continue mobilising Nigerians from detention.

“I’m going to prison to keep mobilizing our people. The court was told by the prosecution that they must insist on sending me to Kuje Prison until Wednesday.

“I came prepared. I even brought my prison bag. All these are happening for a good reason. Somebody must make sacrifices that will benefit this country,” he said.

Sowore attributed the court appearance he missed, which led to the revocation of his bail, to ongoing consultations with his legal team.

According to him, his lead counsel, Olumide-Fusika (SAN), had informed the court that he was unavailable because he was engaged in legal consultations.

He argued that despite the explanation provided by his lawyer, the court proceeded with the remand order based on the single absence.

The activist maintained that his incarceration would not weaken his resolve.

“I need hardly say that I am the least bothered by this development. Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” he added.

Sowore was subsequently taken into custody and is expected to remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the continuation of proceedings on Wednesday.
