Germany’s Denis Undav Takes FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Lead

German striker Denis Undav has climbed to the top of the adidas Golden Boot standings at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after another decisive display for his country.

The VfB Stuttgart forward came off the bench to score twice in Germany’s 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire at Toronto Stadium on Saturday, June 20, taking his tally for the tournament to three goals.

Undav’s rise to the summit was aided by his all-around contribution in Germany’s opening match against Curaçao, where he registered a goal and two assists. Those assists have given him the edge in the race for the tournament’s top individual scoring honour.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Canada forward Jonathan David sit just behind the German striker with three goals each.

Messi fired a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria at Kansas City Stadium, while David produced a treble in Canada’s emphatic 6-0 victory against Qatar in Vancouver on 18 June.

The race remains wide open, with several of world football’s biggest names still in contention. Brazil winger Vinicius Junior, France star Kylian Mbappe, Norway’s Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane are all within striking distance of the leading trio.

Naija News gathered that the adidas Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the FIFA World Cup finals. Where players finish level on goals, the ranking is determined by assists, as assessed by FIFA’s Technical Study Group.

If players remain tied after goals and assists are considered, the award is decided by total minutes played, with the player who has spent fewer minutes on the pitch placed higher in the standings.
