Nigeria’s Inflation Rises To 15.93% In May — NBS

Nigeria’s headline inflation rose for the third consecutive month to 15.93 per cent in May 2026, up from 15.69 per cent recorded in April.

Naija News reports that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) disclosed this in its latest Consumer Price Index and inflation report released on Monday.

According to the report, inflation rose by 1.75 per cent on a month-on-month basis in May.

The NBS report also showed that food inflation rose to 16.96 per cent in May, compared to 16.06 per cent recorded in April.

“In May 2026, the headline inflation rate on a month-on-month basis was 1.75 percent, which was 0.39 percent lower than the rate recorded in April 2026 (2.13 percent),” the report stated.

The bureau said that on a year-on-year basis, headline inflation stood at 15.93 per cent in May 2026.

This was higher than the 15.69 per cent recorded in April 2026 but lower than the 26.06 per cent recorded in May 2025.

“On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate rose to 15.93 percent, up from 15.69 percent in April 2026 and down from 26.06 percent in the same month of the preceding year (May 2025),” the report added.

The NBS said food inflation on a month-on-month basis stood at 2.98 per cent in May, lower than the 3.63 per cent recorded in April.

The report stated, “The Food inflation rate in May 2026 on a month-on-month basis was 2.98 per cent, down by 0.65 percentage points from April 2026 (3.63 per cent).

“On a year-on-year basis, it was 16.96 percent and stood at 24.55 percent in the same month of the preceding year, May 2025.”
