‘I Have No Godfather, See What Happened To My Brother’ – Rivers NDC Gov Candidate, Fubara Declares

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed claims that his political ambition is being sponsored by any godfather, saying his only backing is God.

Naija News reports that Fubara, who is the brother of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, said this during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday night.

He also rejected suggestions that his governorship ambition was an extension of his brother’s political project or that he was merely standing in as a placeholder.

Responding to questions about those behind his ambition, Fubara said he was not being controlled by any political figure.

He said, “I don’t have a godfather but I have God the father. You would also agree with me that if my ambition is determined by the grounds you are mentioning, it would mean I have no clear vision or focus for what I am working toward.

“My brother, Nigerians, and indeed the wider world saw what happened between him and his party. We have different political ideologies and individual perspectives.

“It’s a trying moment for us in Rivers State and there are all sorts of narratives. They come with different narratives and try to set up a perspective for the people to run with but we are focused with our eyes on the ball that the sole of Rivers State must be rescued.”

Fubara said it would be wrong for anyone to conclude that his entrance into the governorship race was tied to the political struggles of his brother.

According to him, he has his own vision and political direction, which are different from those of the governor.

He maintained that his ambition was driven by what he described as the need to rescue Rivers State and not by family ties or external pressure.

The NDC candidate said the state was passing through a difficult political period, adding that several narratives were being pushed by different interests to shape public opinion.

He, however, said he remained focused on his goal of contesting the governorship election.

Fubara formally joined the 2027 governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the expression of interest and nomination forms of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

His entry into the race came amid the political crisis in Rivers State, which has continued to shape discussions ahead of the 2027 election.

The crisis has been largely linked to the long-running feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The disagreement between the two men had triggered impeachment moves, parallel legislative factions and a series of legal battles in the state.

Governor Fubara recently withdrew from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries.

Blessing Fubara announced his own governorship bid days after the governor’s withdrawal, a development that fuelled claims in some quarters that he was acting as a placeholder.

But the NDC candidate insisted that he was in the race on his own terms and not as part of any political arrangement for his brother.
